Peralassery is in Kannur district, in northern Kerala, a short distance inland from the Malabar coast. The town is best known for its Subrahmanya temple, whose large stepped temple tank is one of the best-known features of the area. Pilgrims from across the region come to the temple, and the roads from nearby towns meet near it.
The land around Peralassery is typical of the Malabar midlands. Low hills of red laterite are separated by narrow valleys used for paddy, and houses are scattered among coconut and areca palms instead of being packed into blocks. Roads follow the ridges and valley floors, so the street network looks loose and branching.
