Piet Retief lies in south-eastern Mpumalanga, close to the border with Eswatini, in a region of rolling hills covered by commercial forestry. Founded in 1882 and named after the Voortrekker leader, the town has since been officially renamed eMkhondo. On the map its centre forms a neat rectangular grid, with the main road running straight through and neighbourhoods spreading out on either side.
Timber defines the surrounding landscape. Blocks of pine and eucalyptus plantations cover the slopes, crossed by gravel roads and firebreaks that create a patterned texture around the town. Streams and small dams lie in the valleys between. The town serves as a service centre for forestry and farming, and as a stop on the routes toward the Eswatini border.
