Sobradinho reservoir
The lake created by the Sobradinho dam dominates the frame, its wide surface and indented shoreline forming the most striking element of the map.

La mappa
Pilão Arcado Map Poster & Print
Pilão Arcado is a town in the north of Bahia, on the São Francisco river in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil. It lies on the shore of the Sobradinho reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in the country, and on the map the water occupies a great deal of space, a wide pale expanse against the dry land around it.
The present town is relatively recent. When the Sobradinho dam was built in the 1970s, the rising water flooded several old riverside towns, Pilão Arcado among them, and their inhabitants were resettled in new towns built nearby. That history explains the planned, regular street layout visible on the map today, rather than the organic pattern of an old river port.
A Pilão Arcado map poster shows a community defined by the river and its reservoir. The shoreline gives the print a long, irregular edge, while the grid of streets sits squarely beside it. For people from the town, and for families who remember the old settlement now under the water, it carries particular meaning.

Planned town grid
Built anew when the reservoir was filled, the town is laid out in fairly regular blocks, a tidy grid that contrasts with the irregular edge of the water.
Sertão surroundings
Beyond the town, sparse roads and tracks cross the dry backlands, leaving large open areas on the map that emphasise how remote the settlement is.
