The Svir River
The broad river between Onega and Ladoga runs straight through the map. It is the primary shape in the composition, and the reason the town exists.

La mappa
Podporozh’ye Map Poster & Print
Podporozh’ye stands on the Svir River in the northeast of Leningrad Oblast. The river links Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga, and the town's name refers to the rapids that once made this stretch hard to navigate. Today the Verkhne-Svirskaya hydroelectric station and its lock control the river here. They form part of the Volga-Baltic waterway.
On a map, the Svir is the dominant feature: a broad band of water crossing the frame, with the dam and lock clearly visible as sharp straight lines. The town extends along the river, with a straightforward grid of residential streets, industrial areas near the dam and the railway on its approach. Beyond that, forest and wetland take over.
The Podporozh’ye map poster places the river at the centre, as it is in the town's life. Water, dam and street grid are set against wide, undeveloped surroundings. The result is a simple and powerful composition, typical of Russia's northern industrial rivers.

Dam and lock
The Verkhne-Svirskaya hydro station and its navigation lock cross the river in clean, straight lines. They are easy to see even on small prints.
Riverside grid
Residential streets follow a regular plan along the banks. Forest and marsh surround them on all sides, leaving large areas of open space.
