Pskov Map Poster
Pskov grew around a rocky promontory where the small Pskova River joins the broader Velikaya. On a map the kremlin, or Krom, sits at the tip of this point, a compact triangle of walls between two rivers. Around it, the old town spreads in successive rings once enclosed by fortress walls.
The Velikaya divides the city, with bridges linking the two banks and districts on the western side. Streets fan out from the centre, while the curving river gives the map strong movement. To the north the river continues toward Lake Pskov.
Pskov was the centre of an independent medieval republic and developed its own school of icon painting and architecture. The Mirozhsky Monastery preserves twelfth-century frescoes and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of the city's churches.
