Pūnch Map Poster
Pūnch, also written Poonch, is a town in Jammu and Kashmir close to the Line of Control, in a valley on the southwestern side of the Pir Panjal range. The river that shares its name runs past the town, and steep ridges rise on every side. From above, streets pack into the flatter ground near the water and then climb in tight curves up the slopes.
At the heart of the old town stands Poonch Fort, a historic stronghold of the local rulers. The town's markets and older lanes grew up around it. The district is also known for the Mughal Road, a route over the Pir Panjal toward the Kashmir Valley that follows an old line of travel through the mountains.
