La mappa

Puruliya Map Poster & Print

Puruliya is the headquarters of West Bengal's westernmost district, on the eastern edge of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The ground here is higher and more rolling than the delta to the east. On a map the town forms a fairly compact grid of streets, with roads leading out across open, lightly settled country toward low hills.

In the heart of the town lies Saheb Bandh, a large reservoir whose broad, regular outline is the most striking shape on the map. Streets and neighbourhoods are arranged around it, and smaller ponds are scattered across the town. A Puruliya map poster reads as a pattern of streets interrupted by pale areas of still water.

The wider district is known for Purulia Chhau, a masked dance form included in UNESCO's listing of Chhau dance, and for the Ajodhya Hills to the south-west. Around the town, fields, dry ridges and patches of forest give the edges of the print an open, spacious feel.

Saheb Bandh

The large lake in the centre of town is the focal point of the map, a calm open shape framed on all sides by roads and houses.

02

Plateau setting

Unlike the flat delta further east, Puruliya sits on rolling upland, and the roads leaving town follow the gentle rise and fall of the land.

03

Scattered ponds

Numerous small ponds and tanks punctuate the residential areas, showing up as pale shapes that break the density of the surrounding streets.
