Ramsbottom sits in the valley of the River Irwell, north of Bury in Greater Manchester. Its map shows a classic Pennine mill town: a compact centre of terraced streets running down towards the river, with the railway line following the valley floor and the moorland rising steeply to the west.
Above the town stands Holcombe Hill, crowned by the Peel Monument, a stone tower built in memory of Sir Robert Peel. Ramsbottom is also a stop on the East Lancashire Railway, a heritage line with steam trains running along the valley between Bury and Rawtenstall.
