Ha'urei Bay
The flooded volcanic crater forms a deep bay that reaches into the heart of the island. On the map it is the dominant shape, a sheltered inner sea enclosed by land.

La mappa
Rapa Iti Map Poster & Print
Rapa Iti, often simply called Rapa, is the southernmost inhabited island of French Polynesia, in the Austral Islands. It is the eroded rim of an old volcano. The sea has flooded the crater, forming Ha'urei Bay, which cuts deep into the island from the east. From above, the land forms a jagged ring of ridges and peaks wrapped around that sheltered inner bay.
The island is known for its fortified hilltop villages, called pa. These were built along the ridges, with terraces cut into the peaks, and their remains can still be seen. Today the small population lives in two villages, Ha'urei and Area, on the shores of the bay. There are no large roads, and the island is reached by boat.
A Rapa Iti map poster is shaped almost entirely by the bay and the ridgelines. You see the deep inner harbour, the heavily indented coast and just a few short lanes in the two villages. The rest is open, mountainous ground. It is a dramatic outline, and it reads almost like a crater in cross-section.

The two villages
Ha'urei and Area sit on the shores of the bay. Their few short lanes are the only clusters of streets on the island, small against its ridges.
Serrated coastline
Rapa's outer coast is cut into many small bays and sharp points. That gives the island a spiky, irregular edge that stands out clearly on a white background.

Perché Rapa Iti
Una mappa che ha un significato
Very few people ever reach Rapa Iti, which is exactly why its outline means so much to those who have, and to its own families. Even for others, the crater bay and ridged ring make a striking, almost sculptural print, well suited to a minimalist room.
Add your own title, a subtitle such as a date or village name, and a custom coordinates line. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 HD download covers six print sizes with no watermark, and printed posters come on matte paper with an optional frame.
