Valley town center
The central streets sit on the lowest, flattest ground available, where the town could build most densely before the hills rise around it.

La mappa
Raul Soares Map Poster & Print
Raul Soares is a municipality in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. The landscape is typical of the region: steep, rounded hills, narrow valleys and small streams, with pasture and farmland covering much of the countryside. The town center occupies lower ground, and its streets have grown outward wherever the terrain allows.
The municipality takes its name from Raul Soares de Moura, who served as president of the state of Minas Gerais in the early 1920s. Like many towns in the Zona da Mata, it developed around agriculture, and the rural roads leading out from the center still connect it to farms and smaller communities in the surrounding hills.
A Raul Soares map poster captures a compact urban core whose streets bend and climb with the land, surrounded by the looser lines of country roads. Drawn in black and white, the plan shows how closely a hill town in Minas follows the shape of its valley rather than any fixed grid.

Hillside streets
Beyond the center, streets curve along slopes and climb toward higher neighbourhoods, producing an irregular pattern clearly shaped by the terrain.
Rural road network
Unpaved and paved roads wind out through the hills, linking the town with farms and small settlements across the municipality.
