Redwood City sits on the San Francisco Peninsula, midway between San Francisco and San José, and its map runs from hills to bay. In the west, curving streets climb into the foothills. The historic downtown and a steady grid occupy the middle. To the east, the land turns into sloughs, marshes and the man-made lagoons of Redwood Shores, reaching out into the bay.
The city grew around a port on Redwood Creek, where lumber cut in the nearby hills was shipped out, which gave the place its name. Today it still has a deep-water port, as well as a well-known civic slogan, Climate Best by Government Test. El Camino Real, US Highway 101 and the Caltrain line cross the city in parallel bands.
A Redwood City map poster is full of contrast. Winding hillside roads, a regular central grid and watery eastern shores all appear in one frame.
