Reichenau is the largest island in Lake Constance. It lies in the Untersee, the western part of the lake, close to the city of Konstanz. From above it is a gentle oval of low land a few kilometres long. It is surrounded on all sides by calm water and connected to the mainland by a slim causeway that shows clearly on any map.
The island is divided among three historic villages, Oberzell, Mittelzell and Niederzell. Each has grown up around one of its early medieval churches. Between them lies a fine patchwork of fields and glasshouses, because Reichenau is known for intensive vegetable growing. Small lanes cross the island in a loose grid.
