Rennes grew at the confluence of the Ille and the Vilaine, and from above the rivers are the first thing the eye follows. The Vilaine runs east to west through the middle of the city, straightened and lined with quays, while the Ille and its canal arrive from the north. Around it all, the rocade, a complete ring road, draws a clean oval that contains most of the city.
The historic centre shows two different textures. Timber-framed streets survived in the north, winding and narrow, while the area destroyed by the great fire of 1720 was rebuilt in regular stone blocks and squares around the Parlement de Bretagne. East of the centre, the Thabor garden forms a large green shape of paths and lawns.
