Rochester Map Poster
Rochester, New York, grew around the Genesee River, which runs north through the city to Lake Ontario. On a map, the river is the main line. It runs through downtown, drops at High Falls into a deep gorge and continues north to the lake shore. Streets radiate from the centre in a pattern shaped by nineteenth-century growth.
The city grew as a milling town and a stop on the Erie Canal, and later became home to Kodak, Xerox and Bausch & Lomb. It is also closely tied to Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Olmsted-designed parks, including Highland Park with its lilacs, add large green shapes to the map.
