Rongjiang lies in the uplands of northern Yunnan, in southwest China, a region of high ridges, deep valleys and scattered level ground. From above, a town like this does not spread freely. It gathers where the land flattens out, with roads following contours and valley floors, and the terrain around it closely shapes the built-up area.
Northern Yunnan is a landscape of farmed slopes, winding mountain roads and rivers cut deep into the rock, and the map around Rongjiang reflects that. Roads bend and double back as they climb, while fields and small settlements occupy whatever gentle slopes there are. The pattern is irregular and organic, far from the straight grids of lowland cities.
