Rosário is a town in the north of Maranhão, not far from the island capital of São Luís. Seen from above, it is shaped by water: a river winds past the built-up area, and the surrounding lowland is laced with channels and wet ground that head toward the wide bays of the Atlantic coast.
The town itself is compact, with a simple street grid that runs up from the riverside and gradually loosens into scattered roads. On a Rosário map poster, the curves of the river give the composition its movement, while the straight streets provide a calm counterweight on the drier ground.
