Royal Tunbridge Wells lies on hilly ground in west Kent, on the edge of the High Weald. Its streets do not form a grid. They curve along ridges and slopes, following the terrain in long, flowing lines. At the centre of the map, the Common appears as a large open space of woodland and grass, surrounded on all sides by houses and roads.
The town grew around the Chalybeate Spring, discovered in the seventeenth century, and the colonnaded Pantiles beside it became the centre of a fashionable spa. Georgian and Victorian districts followed, with terraces, crescents and villas spreading up the hills. Parks such as Calverley Grounds and Dunorlan Park add more green spaces across the map.
