The baroque palace sits on a ridge above the old town. Its grounds and approach roads form a distinctive shape on the slope overlooking the streets below.

La mappa
Rudolstadt Map Poster & Print
Rudolstadt lies in the valley of the Saale in Thuringia, where the river winds between wooded slopes. For centuries it was the residence of the Counts, later Princes, of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Their palace, Heidecksburg, still stands on the hill above the old town. On a map, the town stretches along the valley, with the river and the rail line running parallel beside it.
Rudolstadt has a notable place in German literary history. In 1788 Schiller and Goethe first met here, in the house of the Lengefeld family. Today the town is widely known for the Rudolstadt-Festival, one of Europe's largest folk, roots and world music festivals, held each July.
A Rudolstadt map poster shows the elongated shape of a valley town. There are streets pressed between river and hillside, the curving park and palace grounds above, and bridges crossing the Saale to the other bank. It is a gently structured composition that reflects its landscape closely.

Saale valley
The river winds through the valley floor, and the town follows it in a long, narrow band, with the railway tracing a parallel line close by.
Old town streets
Below the palace, the historic centre is a close network of lanes and small squares, dense against the open meadows and water beside it.
