Rufā‘a lies in Al Jazirah State in Sudan, on the east bank of the Blue Nile, across the river from Hasaheisa. On a map, the river forms the western edge of the town. The streets extend inland from the bank in a loose grid, and then give way to flat land toward the east.
The town has an important place in Sudan's history of education. In the early twentieth century Babiker Badri opened a school for girls in Rufā‘a, widely regarded as the first in the country. It laid the groundwork for what later became Ahfad University for Women in Omdurman. The town's name is closely tied to that story.
