Runan lies in Zhumadian prefecture in southern Henan, on the broad, level plain between the Yellow River and the Huai. The name refers to its position south of the Ru River, and the area has been an administrative centre for a very long time, lending its name to a historical commandery. From above, the town is a compact street pattern set in open farmland.
The flatness of the land shapes everything on the map. Roads run in long, straight lines toward neighbouring towns, field boundaries form an almost regular pattern, and waterways and ponds break the grid here and there.
