Castle moats
The wide moats of the former Saga Castle enclose a large, rectangular area near the centre. They are one of the most geometric shapes on the map, set among the looser streets.

La mappa
Saga Map Poster & Print
Saga lies on the broad, flat Saga Plain in northern Kyushu. The land slopes almost imperceptibly toward the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea. From above, the city is threaded with small creeks and irrigation canals. The streets follow their lines, and the rectangular moats of the former castle mark out the centre.
Saga was the seat of the Nabeshima clan, lords of the Saga domain, which became one of the leaders of Japan's modernisation in the nineteenth century. The rebuilt main hall of Saga Castle now houses a history museum. Every autumn, the Saga International Balloon Fiesta fills the sky above the riverbanks with hundreds of hot-air balloons.
A Saga map poster shows a city defined by water on a flat surface. The castle moats form a clear square frame. Canals and creeks cut fine lines through the blocks, and to the south the paddy fields open out toward the sea, which ends the city with a quiet margin.

Creek network
Small creeks and canals, a legacy of centuries of irrigation and drainage, run all through the city. They create a network of thin, winding lines crossing the streets.
Kase River
The Kase River runs along the western side of the city toward the Ariake Sea. Its riverbanks host the Balloon Fiesta, and on the map it forms a steady curving boundary.
