Sagara sits on the western shore of Suruga Bay, where the coast runs in a long, gentle curve. Since 2005 it has been part of the city of Makinohara, but the old town still has a shape of its own: a compact set of streets near the water, a fishing harbour, and a river reaching the sea at the edge of town.
In the Edo period Sagara was a castle town. It is best remembered as the domain of Tanuma Okitsugu, the powerful eighteenth-century shogunate official. Later it earned an unusual place in industrial history. The Sagara oil field, worked from the Meiji era onward, is often described as the only oil field on the Pacific side of Japan.
Behind the coast the land rises to the Makinohara plateau, one of the country's best-known green tea districts.
