Saint-Basile-le-Grand is a suburban town in the Montérégie region of Quebec, east of Montreal on the South Shore. From above it is a pattern of curving residential streets, crescents and cul-de-sacs typical of the late twentieth century, crossed by a railway line and a main road. To the west the forested slopes of Mont Saint-Bruno rise from the flat surrounding plain.
The town is served by a commuter rail station on the line between Montreal and Mont-Saint-Hilaire, and many residents work in the metropolitan area. Beyond the suburban streets the land opens into farmland toward the Richelieu river, and the nearby Mont-Saint-Bruno national park offers trails and lakes close to home.
