San Carlos lies in Chile's central valley, in the Ñuble Region, north of the regional capital Chillán. From above, it is a classic Chilean town plan: a grid of square blocks arranged around a central plaza, with straight streets running out to the surrounding farmland. The Pan-American Highway passes nearby, part of the long north-south corridor that ties the valley together.
Beyond the town, the land is flat and agricultural, divided into fields and crossed by irrigation channels and rural roads. On clear days the Andes rise to the east, although on a street map they appear only as the direction the roads eventually climb. San Carlos is widely associated with Violeta Parra, the folk singer and artist, who was born in the area.
