San Juan is the smallest city in the Philippines by land area, a compact territory surrounded by Quezon City, Manila and Mandaluyong. Its map is dense and closely woven. Residential streets rise and fall over low hills, major roads cross from one neighbouring city into the next, and the San Juan River traces part of its edge.
The city holds an important place in Philippine history. In August 1896 one of the first battles of the revolution against Spain was fought here, and the Pinaglabanan Shrine now marks the site. San Juan is also known for Greenhills, a shopping and residential district whose curving subdivision streets stand out clearly on the map.
