Santa Rita lies on the Maranhão mainland, south of the island of São Luís, in low country crossed by rivers and wetlands flowing toward the Atlantic bays. From above the town looks modest and practical. Its streets form a loose grid alongside the main highway that links the state capital with the interior, and the built area thins quickly into fields, scrub and water.
Like many towns in this part of Maranhão, Santa Rita is closely tied to the road that passes through it. The highway brings trade and travellers, and much of the town's layout follows that line.
