Santiago lies just south of Monterrey in Nuevo León, where the plain meets the steep front of the Sierra Madre Oriental. On the map, the old town appears as a compact grid around its main square and church. Newer development spreads along the highway corridor, and scattered weekend homes sit between the hills. The mountains to the south and west leave large empty spaces in the composition.
One of the most prominent features is the Rodrigo Gómez reservoir, known locally as La Boca. It sits north of the town and adds an irregular body of water to the frame. Santiago is designated a Pueblo Mágico and is known for the Cola de Caballo waterfall in the mountains nearby. It's a popular weekend escape for people from Monterrey.
