Savanūr lies in Haveri district in northern Karnataka, on the flat uplands of the Deccan plateau. For more than two centuries it was the seat of the Nawabs of Savanur, rulers of a small princely state that lasted until shortly after Indian independence. Their legacy is still felt in the older parts of town, which on the map gather into a dense, irregular core.
From above, the structure is easy to read. A tight cluster of lanes and small blocks forms the historic centre, and newer residential areas spread outward along the main roads in a looser, more regular pattern. Beyond them the plateau opens into broad farmland, crossed by straight rural roads connecting Savanūr with Haveri, Hubballi and neighbouring towns.
