São João town
In June, the squares and streets of the centre become the setting for one of Bahia's best-known São João festivals. On the map they form the town's compact heart.

La mappa
Senhor do Bonfim Map Poster & Print
Senhor do Bonfim lies in the north of Bahia, in the semi-arid sertão of north-eastern Brazil. From above, the town sits among low hills and ridges, surrounded by dry caatinga scrubland and farmland. Its centre is a compact grid of streets and squares, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward along the main roads and the slopes around it.
The town is a regional hub for the surrounding backlands, with highways leading off towards other towns in the interior. It is known throughout Bahia for its São João celebrations in June, among the largest in the state, when forró music fills the streets and visitors arrive from across the region.
A Senhor do Bonfim map poster shows a sertão town in a clear, simple form. There is a dense core, roads running straight or curving over the hills, and open, lightly textured land beyond. In black and white, the edge between town and caatinga is very clear. It is a strong, unpretentious picture of a place that means a great deal to the people from it.

Sertão hills
Low hills and ridges surround the town and give its outer streets curving, uneven lines. The effect contrasts with the regular grid at the centre.
Backland roads
Long highways leave the town across the open caatinga. On the poster they read as clean lines connecting Senhor do Bonfim to the wider interior.

Perché Senhor do Bonfim
Una mappa che ha un significato
Many people from Senhor do Bonfim have moved to Salvador, São Paulo or further afield, and they return for São João. A map of the town is a way to keep that home, and that festival, on the wall all year.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with your neighbourhood or a year of São João, and set the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the sertão landscape well.
