Serrita is in the sertão of Pernambuco, in a semi-arid landscape of caatinga scrub, low ridges and seasonal rivers. On a map the town is a small, compact cluster. Around it, the roads and tracks that connect it to scattered rural settlements and grazing land stand out clearly against a lot of open ground.
Serrita is best known for the Missa do Vaqueiro, the cowboys' mass held each year in honour of the vaqueiro Raimundo Jacó. It has become one of the best-known cultural events of the northeastern backlands. Riders in leather gear gather for an open-air celebration that ties the town to the region's cattle-herding tradition.
