Shivpuri lies on the plateau of northern Madhya Pradesh, south-west of Gwalior. Its map is unusual for a town of its size because so much of the frame is taken up by water and forest. The built-up area sits right beside the large wooded expanse of Madhav National Park, with lakes spreading across the landscape around it.
Sakhya Sagar and Madhav Sagar, reservoirs created in the early twentieth century, are the largest shapes on the map, their irregular shores fringed with forest. The town mixes older bazaar streets with wider roads laid out when the Scindia rulers of Gwalior used Shivpuri as their summer capital.
The marble chhatris, or cenotaphs, of the Scindia family stand in formal gardens in the town, set around a water tank, and are among its best-known sights.
