Sousa lies in the interior of Paraíba, in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil. The town grew beside the Rio do Peixe, and on the map the river's course and the lines of vegetation along it are the main natural features in a largely open, flat landscape. The streets form a broad grid that extends from the older centre towards the highway.
The surrounding municipality is best known for the Vale dos Dinossauros, the Valley of the Dinosaurs, where fossilised footprints left in ancient riverbed sediments are preserved in the rock. It is one of the most significant sites of its kind in Brazil and draws visitors to a region otherwise known for farming and hot, dry weather.
