La mappa
Springfield Map Poster & Print
Springfield rises from the east bank of the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts. On the map, the river forms a strong vertical line along its western edge, with Interstate 91 running beside it and bridges reaching across to West Springfield. Downtown is a compact grid close to the water, and residential neighbourhoods fan out to the east and south.
The city has an unusual list of firsts. Basketball was invented here in 1891 by James Naismith at the YMCA training school, and the Basketball Hall of Fame stands by the river. The Springfield Armory made American military firearms for almost two centuries, and Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was born here.
A Springfield map poster reads like a cross-section of an old industrial city. The river, the rail lines and the highway run side by side, the grid climbs the hill beyond, and the large green shape of Forest Park opens up the southern part of the map. In black and white the layers are especially easy to read.

Forest Park
One of the largest urban parks in the country fills a wide area in the south of the city, and its curving drives show up as a softer pattern within the streets.
Downtown by the water
The historic centre sits on a tight grid near the riverbank, separated from the water by the interstate and railway, a layering typical of New England mill cities.
