Srikalahasti lies on the banks of the Swarnamukhi River in southern Andhra Pradesh, not far from Tirupati. The town is centred on the Srikalahasteeswara Temple, one of the great Shiva shrines of South India, and the older streets are arranged around its walled precinct. Bare rocky hills rise close behind the temple, limiting the town's growth on that side.
The temple is revered as the site of the Vayu linga, which represents wind among the five elemental shrines of Shiva, and pilgrims come in large numbers all year. On the map the rectangular compound stands out clearly within the surrounding lanes, with the river curving past nearby.
