St. Charles sits on the Fox River in Kane County, about forty miles west of Chicago. The river runs north to south through the middle of town, and this defines the map. Downtown lies on both banks, and several bridges tie the east and west sides together. Beyond the older grid, curving subdivisions, parks and forest preserves spread across the surrounding prairie.
The riverfront is the heart of the town. Downtown includes the Arcada Theatre, a 1920s movie palace, and the Hotel Baker, a landmark from the same era on the water's edge. Parks and trails follow the Fox River for long stretches, turning its banks into a green corridor through St. Charles and neighbouring towns.
