Svalyava lies in Zakarpattia, in the far west of Ukraine, in a valley of the Carpathian Mountains. The Latorytsia River runs through the town, and the map is shaped by it: the main streets follow the river and the valley floor, while side streets climb a short way up the slopes before giving way to forest.
The Svalyava area is widely known for its mineral water springs, and several well-known Transcarpathian mineral waters come from the district. Sanatoriums and spa resorts lie in the nearby valleys, and the town has long been a stop on the route across the mountains.
