Szarvas lies in Békés County on the Hungarian Great Plain, a land of wide horizons and slow rivers. Its most striking map feature is the Holt-Körös, a dead arm of the Körös River left behind when the main channel was straightened. The oxbow bends in wide loops around and through the town, giving an otherwise flat landscape a strong, meandering line.
The town has a regular, spacious street grid typical of the Great Plain, with long straight streets and generous blocks. Along the Holt-Körös lies the Szarvas Arboretum, one of Hungary’s best-known botanical collections. Szarvas also claims to stand at the geographical centre of historical Hungary, and was home to Sámuel Tessedik, a pioneer of agricultural education.
