La mappa

Tagajō-shi Map Poster & Print

Tagajō sits in Miyagi Prefecture between the city of Sendai and the port of Shiogama, near the shores of Matsushima Bay. On the map it is a small, dense city, its residential streets, rail lines and industrial areas all compressed into a narrow band of land between hills and coast.

The city is named after Taga Castle, founded in the eighth century as the administrative and military centre of the northern frontier province of Mutsu. The ruins of the fortress are now a special historic site in the hills north of the centre, along with the Tsubo-no-Ishibumi, an ancient stone stele celebrated in classical poetry.

A Tagajō-shi map poster shows both layers: the open grounds of the ancient site and the modern grid of the city. Low-lying parts of the city were flooded in the 2011 tsunami, and the rebuilt coastal districts are part of the current street pattern.

Taga Castle ruins

The site of the ancient fortress appears as open, lightly built ground in the northern hills, a quiet space surrounded by the modern city.

02

Railway corridors

Rail lines run through the city toward Sendai and Shiogama, dividing the dense neighbourhoods with long, straight lines.

03

Coastal lowlands

Toward the bay the land flattens into industrial and residential districts, rebuilt after 2011 and linked closely to the port area.
