Tamba was formed in 2004 from six towns in the old Hikami district of inland Hyōgo, so it has several settled cores, not one centre. On a map, built-up areas follow the flat valley floors and rail lines, while wooded mountains take up most of the ground between them and push the streets into long, thin shapes.
One unusual fact about the area is a watershed. In the Hikawa district lies one of the lowest central divides in Japan, where rain can end up either in the Sea of Japan or in the Seto Inland Sea. The Kako and Yura river systems begin close together in these hills.
A Tamba map poster works almost like a relief study: winding roads, rivers and patches of rice fields set in blank highland. The area is also known for Tamba black soybeans and for dinosaur fossils found in local riverbanks, which gives the quiet landscape a surprisingly deep past.
