La mappa

Tamlūk Map Poster & Print

Tamlūk lies on the west bank of the Rupnarayan river in Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, where the river widens on its way to the Hooghly estuary. It is the district headquarters. On a map it appears as an irregular web of streets and lanes over low, flat ground, with ponds, tanks and fields filling the gaps between neighbourhoods.

Tamlūk is generally identified with Tamralipta, one of the great ports of ancient India. The port appears in classical and Buddhist sources and was visited by Chinese pilgrims such as Faxian. Silt and shifting channels moved the coastline away long ago, but the town still keeps its link to the river. It is also known for the Bargabhima temple, an important Shakti shrine.

A Tamlūk map poster captures that deltaic character: a river edge on one side, many water tanks scattered across the town, and roads running out through paddy land toward Haldia, Kolkata and the rest of Medinipur. It is a gentle, intricate map that rewards a close look.

01

Rupnarayan river

The broad river runs along the eastern side of town. Its wide sweep of water defines the composition and recalls the port that once stood here.

02

Ponds and tanks

Many small water bodies lie scattered among the streets. On the map they appear as pale shapes that give the poster a soft, dotted texture.

03

Delta farmland

Around the edges, rice fields and village lanes stretch across the flat plain, and the town fades gradually into countryside.
