Tanba is less a single town than a chain of valleys. Formed in 2004 from six former towns, it covers a wide stretch of hill country in the interior of Hyōgo, and on a map its roads follow the valley floors while the ridges between them stay blank and green. Small centres such as Kaibara and Hikami appear as clusters along those corridors.
One of the city's curiosities is a watershed. Near Hikami the divide between rivers draining to the Sea of Japan and those flowing to the Seto Inland Sea drops to roughly 95 metres, often cited as the lowest in Japan. The region is also known for its large black soybeans and its chestnuts, grown in the fields that fill the valley bottoms.
