The northern shoreline
The coast runs fairly straight along the top of the island, so it gives the poster a strong horizontal line that the rest of the map is arranged around.

La mappa
Tandai Map Poster & Print
Tandai lies on the northern coast of Guadalcanal, the largest island of the Solomon Islands, west of the capital, Honiara. On a map it forms a narrow band. The shoreline runs along one edge and the land climbs quickly toward the forested interior on the other. Most of the road network follows the coast, with short tracks turning inland.
Guadalcanal is known well beyond the Pacific because of the long campaign fought here during the Second World War. The waters off this northern coast are still called Iron Bottom Sound after the many ships that sank there. Today the coast is mostly residential and agricultural. Small streams come down from the hills and cut across the coastal road on their way to the sea.
A Tandai map poster shows this simple arrangement clearly. The sea takes up one side of the sheet and a line of roads and buildings follows the water. The upland behind it stays almost empty. In black and white, the page turns into a study of edges: surf against sand, sand against settlement, settlement against slope.

Coast-hugging road
The main road follows the shore closely, and most other lanes branch off it. It works like a spine, with small streets attached at intervals.
Streams from the hills
Short watercourses come down from the interior ridges and cross the coastal strip. In print they show as fine lines running across the settled band.

Perché Tandai
Una mappa che ha un significato
Many people who hang a map of Tandai have a family connection to Guadalcanal or have worked on the island. Others have followed its wartime history. The map shows the island's coast plainly and doesn't reduce it to a postcard.
You can add a family name, a year or the coordinates to the title lines. Then choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD files cost $9 and include six print sizes.
