Tanjay lies on the eastern coast of Negros Island in the province of Negros Oriental. On a map, its town centre sits near the coast, where a river flows into the sea. The coastal highway runs north and south through it, while smaller roads head inland across farmland toward the mountains in the island's interior. The shoreline forms a clear eastern edge to the town.
Tanjay is one of the older towns of Negros Oriental and dates back to the Spanish colonial period. Like many Philippine towns of that era, its centre is arranged around a church and plaza. Around it are homes and markets, and the surrounding countryside is devoted mainly to sugarcane and other crops. The town is also known locally for its religious festivals and its musical tradition.
