Terceira is one of the central islands of the Azores, in the North Atlantic. From above it is a broad oval of volcanic ground, with high calderas and ridges in the interior and a gentler coastal fringe. Much of its lower land is divided by stone walls into a fine patchwork of green pastures.
Angra do Heroísmo, on the south coast, is the island's historic centre. Its streets follow an early planned grid laid out in the age of Atlantic navigation, beside a sheltered bay protected by the extinct volcanic peninsula of Monte Brasil. Praia da Vitória, on the east coast, faces a wide bay near the Lajes air base.
