Tewksbury is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on the edge of the Merrimack Valley just east of Lowell. It is suburban through and through, and the map shows it: few straight streets, many curving roads and cul-de-sacs, patches of woodland and ponds between neighbourhoods. The Shawsheen River runs through the town from south to north, a thin meandering line through the green spaces.
Two major highways cross the area, Interstate 495 and Interstate 93, meeting at a large interchange near the town's northern edge. Route 38 runs as the historic main road through the centre. Settled in the colonial era and incorporated in 1734, Tewksbury has long been home to Tewksbury Hospital, a state institution whose campus forms a large open area on the map.
