Texas City lies on the western shore of Galveston Bay, between Houston and Galveston. The city's shape is defined by the water. A regular street grid spreads inland, while the port, refineries and industrial plants occupy the shoreline, and the Texas City Dike runs for miles straight out into the bay.
The city is remembered for the Texas City disaster of 1947, when a ship loaded with ammonium nitrate exploded in the port. It was one of the deadliest industrial accidents in American history. Today the port and petrochemical industry remain central to the local economy, and the dike is a popular spot for fishing and watching ships.
