Thiès sits on a low plateau about seventy kilometres east of Dakar, where the main routes into the Senegalese interior branch off. Its growth came with the railway. From above, the centre shows a colonial-era grid of regular blocks, with the long rail corridor and yard as its main feature. Newer neighbourhoods spread out from there in looser patterns.
The railway workshops made Thiès an industrial town, and in 1947–48 railway workers here took part in a long strike on the Dakar–Niger line. Ousmane Sembène later made it the subject of his novel God's Bits of Wood. A Thiès map poster traces the streets where much of that story took place.
The city is also known for its tapestry workshops, where artists weave large wall hangings based on painted designs. Both the workshops and the rail yards connect Thiès to work done with the hands. On the map, the heavy lines of the tracks sit beside the finer lines of residential lanes.
