Ţimā is a market town in Sohag Governorate, in the narrow stretch of Upper Egypt where the Nile Valley is a strip of green between two deserts. Its map shows a close-packed centre of short, winding streets, surrounded by farmland divided into narrow plots. Canals and roads cross the fields in long straight lines, tying the town to the villages around it.
The pattern is typical of the valley, where every piece of cultivable land is valuable and settlements grow inward and upward rather than sprawling outward. Roads running roughly parallel to the river connect Ţimā with Asyut to the north and Sohag to the south, placing it on the long north–south corridor of Upper Egypt.
