Timaru sits on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, roughly halfway between Christchurch and Dunedin. On a map the town lies along the shore, with the port's breakwaters reaching into the Pacific and the curving beach of Caroline Bay just to the north.
Caroline Bay is itself a product of the harbour. The breakwater built for the port caused sand to build up, creating the wide beach and park that now shape the waterfront. Behind it, the streets follow a mostly regular pattern across low, rolling hills.
A Timaru map poster also reflects the town's building material. Many older buildings are made from local bluestone, a dark volcanic rock. Timaru is also linked with Phar Lap, the famous racehorse, who was foaled nearby. The town's coastline and gently sloping streets make an elegant print.
