La mappa

Tōbetsu Map Poster

Tōbetsu lies in the Ishikari region of Hokkaido, just north of Sapporo, with the Ishikari River forming its western edge. The map shows a quiet mix of small residential districts and extensive farmland, the whole area laid out on a broad, flat plain with low hills rising toward the east. The river curves along one side of the sheet, framing everything else.

Much of the land follows the rectangular grid typical of Hokkaido's settlement era, when farmland was surveyed in regular plots. Tōbetsu also has an unusual link to Sweden: the Sweden Hills residential area was built in a Scandinavian style, and the town maintains a sister-city relationship with Leksand in Sweden.

A Tōbetsu map poster captures a very different side of Hokkaido from the busy streets of Sapporo. The long straight roads, regular fields and scattered clusters of houses create an open, measured composition, while the Ishikari River and its old channels add a looser, flowing element along the edge.

Ishikari River

The river runs along the western side of Tōbetsu in wide curves, with old channels and floodplain land marking its path across the plain.

02

Farmland grid

Straight roads divide the fields into large rectangles, a pattern from Hokkaido's settlement period that gives the map a calm, orderly structure.

03

Sweden Hills

The Scandinavian-style residential area forms its own distinct cluster of streets, a small piece of the town's unusual connection with Sweden.
